Zirconia powder for specialised industrial applications: Discover CL2, CL3 and pure grades with defined particle sizes, tailored to your technical requirements.
NMD Metalpowders offers a range of selected zirconia powders for industrial and scientific applications where defined particle size distributions, traceable specifications and reproducible material properties are crucial.
Our range includes Zirconium powder type 1 CL2 and Zirconium powder type 1 CL3 in accordance with MIL-Z-399D and pure zirconium powder for further technical requirements.
The products shown on this page are metallic zirconium powders. They are not to be confused with the natural mineral zircon or zirconium silicate, nor with the ceramic material zirconium oxide.
The quality of zirconia powder suitable for a particular process does not depend solely on the type of metal. The powder grade, particle size distribution, chemical limits, further processing, and the required testing and batch documentation must also be taken into account.

Metallic zirconium powder is used in specialised processes where specific reaction characteristics, controlled particle sizes and reproducible properties are required.
The specific suitability of a particular grade of powder must always be assessed in the context of the relevant process and requirements profile.
Due to its reactivity, zirconium powder can be used as a functional component in pyrotechnic devices and signalling systems. A clearly defined powder grade, a controlled particle size distribution and a consistent chemical composition are crucial for reliable and reproducible processing.
Which variant is suitable depends, amongst other things, on the desired reaction characteristics, the formulation used and the applicable safety and process requirements.
In ignition and initiator systems where specifications are critical, even slight differences in particle size distribution can influence mixing, metering and reaction behaviour. For this reason, enquiries should specify not just „zirconium powder“, but the required grade, including the underlying specification.
Particularly relevant in this context are batch consistency, sieve analysis, chemical limit values, test documentation and traceability.
In the aerospace industry, materials and powder grades are required for highly specialised processes that must function reliably under demanding thermal and technical conditions.
Whether CL2, CL3 or another grade of zirconia powder is suitable for a specific application must be assessed on the basis of the component’s function, the subsequent processing and the required specifications.
For selected sintering and pressing processes, a controlled particle size distribution can form an important basis for packing behaviour, compaction and reproducible initial conditions.
In addition to grain size, grain shape, bulk density, oxygen content, pressing pressure and temperature control can also be decisive factors. An upper grain size limit alone is therefore not sufficient to conclusively assess suitability for a sintering process.
Depending on the powder characteristics and the manufacturing system, zirconia powder can also be tested for selected additive manufacturing processes.
When assessing suitability, particular consideration must be given not only to particle size distribution but also to morphology, flowability, bulk density, oxygen content, protective atmosphere, and plant and process parameters. CL2 or CL3 are therefore not automatically suitable for every 3D printing process.
Metallic zirconium powder can also be tested for use in selected surface coatings and specialised industrial processes. The properties achieved by the finished coating or component depend on the overall coating system, the quality of the powder and the process parameters used.
The right grade of zirconia powder depends primarily on your application, the process used and the required specifications.
CL2 and CL3 are suitable for clearly defined requirements, whilst pure zirconia powder offers greater flexibility for specific industrial and scientific applications.
What matters is not which variant appears to be the finest or highest quality on paper, but which powder quality reliably suits your processing needs, your quality specifications and your documentation requirements.
NMD Metalpowders helps you to suitable grade of zirconia powder to select the right suppliers, reduce procurement risks and avoid unnecessary sampling or delays.
You can find a direct comparison of the two classes in our technical article:
Zirconia powder CL2 or CL3: Which variant is right for your application?
Procuring powders that meet specification requirements correctly and avoiding incorrect purchases
An unsuitable powder grade, incorrect particle sizes or incomplete documentation can lead to additional sampling, delays and avoidable costs. Particularly in the case of highly specified applications, it is therefore not sufficient simply to state the material name.
NMD Metalpowders helps you to clearly define the required grade, particle size distribution, quantity, packaging and documentation before you place your order.
