Ultra-fine copper powders for industrial applications

NMD Metalpowders offers ultra-fine copper powders in the UF2, UF3 and UF5 grades. The powders differ in terms of their defined particle size distributions, allowing for a targeted selection to meet different processing requirements.

Copper is an important material for electronic and industrial applications due to its high electrical and thermal conductivity. The suitability of a particular powder grade depends not only on particle size but also on purity, particle shape, surface condition and the process used.

We can help you narrow down these requirements for your procurement process.

Our range of ultra-fine copper powders

We are your reliable source for ultra-fine copper powders such as:

Ultrafine copper powder grain distribution UF2, UF3 and UF5 - NMD Metalpowders
  • Ultrafine copper powder UF2: D50: 1.0–2.0 µm, D90: ≤ 6 µm, D100: ≤ 9 µm. Of the three variants, UF2 has the smallest D50 range.
  • Ultra-fine copper powder UF3: D50: 2.0–3.0 µm, D90: ≤ 8 µm, D100: ≤ 12 µm. In terms of the specified particle sizes, UF3 lies between UF2 and UF5.
  • Ultra-fine copper powder UF5: D50: 3.0–5.0 µm, D90: ≤ 10 µm, D100: ≤ 15 µm. Within this product range, UF5 has the larger particle size parameters.

The D50 value describes the median of the particle size distribution, not the maximum particle size. When making a selection, therefore, D90 and D100, as well as other powder properties, should also be taken into account. A finer grain size does not automatically mean greater manufacturing precision or better workability.

Further selection criteria are explained in our Guide to the Selection and Procurement of Copper Powder.

Applications of ultrafine copper powders

Fine copper powders are used as the metallic component in conductive pastes and adhesives. In the Semiconductors and electronics Factors such as particle size, purity and the distribution of the powder within the respective formulation are relevant. The electrical conductivity of the finished system also depends on its composition and processing.

For the additive manufacturing The powder quality must be tailored to the specific process. In the case of ultrafine copper powders, particular attention must be paid to powder application, flow behaviour and potential agglomeration. Whether UF2, UF3 or UF5 is suitable depends on the production system and the intended process conditions.

Copper powders can be used as a conductive component in coatings and shielding materials. The desired film thickness, the particle size distribution and the binder system used are key factors in the selection process. The properties of the finished coating result from the interaction between the powder, the formulation and the coating process.
